Two of the largest wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon in the US have agreed that the days of unlimited Internet mobile phone access are numbered.
A week after AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said the telecom industry would transition to "variable pricing," Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer Anthony Melone was also quoted to have said unlimited Internet access 'has to change'.
Plans offering "as much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change," Melone told the Wall Street Journal. He added that the companies need to offer a transparent way for customers to track how much data they're using.
If this is the case, this could really affect the way the business model of mobile content and services are created in the future. Currently the heat is on to find the ultimate business model that works but to start introducing a pricing structure for streaming different types of media could pave the way for confusion and unsurmounting hurdles to overcome. Not only would this harm vendors but be at a cost to the user as well.
